The paper deals with the issue of collection and separation of municipal solid waste. The latest trends in the subject area are presented. Attention is focused on the possibility of applying semi-underground containers in densely populated urban areas. The authors of the paper prepared a study of the feasibility of using such containers in the city district of KVP Košice. The paper also includes computer simulations of container stand design.
